Commercial Interior Design in Ahmedabad
Commercial spaces have to earn their keep. Whether it is a retail unit, a brand space, a clinic, a training centre or a mixed commercial fit-out, the space must help the business sell, serve or impress, and it must do that within a fixed budget and opening date.
Studio MINIM is an architecture and interior design studio in Ahmedabad, founded in 2018 by Ar. Shruti Desai (CEPT). Commercial spaces, together with offices and corporate houses, are where the studio built its practice. We design commercial interiors in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat.
What we design
Retail and brand spaces for companies selling directly to customers.
Brand galleries and display spaces for manufacturers.
Service businesses such as clinics, studios and training centres.
Commercial buildings and façades, where architecture and interiors are designed together.
Mixed commercial fit-outs combining retail, office and display.
For a repeatable store across a dealer network, see Dealership & Franchise Store Design. For a workplace, see Office & Corporate Interior Design.
The problems we solve
Spaces designed without a business goal. Attractive interiors that do not help sell, serve or convert.
Poor customer flow. Entrances, counters and displays placed where they cause crowding or dead zones.
Budgets that drift. Decisions left until site, where they cost most.
Spaces that age quickly. Finishes and fixtures that wear out or date within a couple of years.
Disconnected façade and interior. A shopfront that promises one thing and an interior that delivers another.
How we plan a commercial space
Every commercial brief starts with the same questions: who comes in, what do they need to do, and what does the business need them to do? From there we plan:
Entrance and façade. Visibility from the street or mall corridor, signage and the first impression.
Customer journey. The route from entrance to display, consultation and billing, avoiding crowding at peak times.
Display and service zones. Sized for the products or services and the number of staff.
Back-of-house. Storage, staff areas and services kept out of sight but easy to reach.
Lighting. Layered lighting for display, ambience and tasks.
Durability. Materials chosen for heavy public use and easy maintenance.
Commercial interiors in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad's commercial spaces range from high-street units and malls to the office and retail buildings along SG Highway, Prahlad Nagar, Bodakdev and Sindhu Bhavan Road. Each brings its own conditions: mall fit-out rules and working hours, high-street signage regulations, and strong sunlight on west-facing glass fronts. Being based in the city, we know these conditions and can review sites quickly. We also work in Vadodara and Surat.
Priorities by type of commercial space
Retail unit. What the design must get right: Frontage and visibility, display capacity, a clear route to billing, stock storage
Brand gallery. What the design must get right: Product presentation, lighting, space for consultations and small events
Clinic or service business. What the design must get right: Reception and waiting, privacy, hygiene-friendly finishes, staff flow
Training or learning centre. What the design must get right: Flexible rooms, acoustics, projection and screen visibility, durable furniture
Mixed commercial floor. What the design must get right: Clear separation of public and staff areas, shared services, signage and wayfinding
Before you sign a lease
Many commercial problems are locked in when the property is chosen. We can review a shortlisted unit before you commit and check frontage and signage permissions, floor-to-ceiling height, structural columns that may block displays, the capacity of electrical and air-conditioning supply, water and drainage points, fire exits, and the landlord's or mall's fit-out rules and approval process. A short review can change the rent negotiation or rule out a unit that would be expensive to fit out.
Designing for durability and upkeep
A commercial interior faces far more wear than a home or office. We choose flooring, wall finishes, counters and fixtures for heavy footfall and frequent cleaning; detail edges and corners that get knocked; keep lighting fixtures standard enough to replace locally; and plan display systems that staff can rearrange without damaging finishes. The aim is a space that still looks right after years of daily use, not just on opening day.
Working with landlords and opening dates
Commercial projects usually run against a fixed opening date and a rent-free fit-out period. We plan the design programme backwards from that date, prepare drawings for landlord or mall approval early, and sequence decisions so long-lead items such as custom joinery, signage and lighting are ordered in time. This protects the opening date, which is often worth more to the business than any single design choice.
Common commercial fit-out mistakes
Designing before the brief is clear. Without agreed goals, footfall expectations and budget, layouts get redrawn repeatedly and the programme slips.
Underestimating services. Air conditioning, power and data are often sized late, forcing changes to ceilings and finished walls.
Too much display, too little storage. Stock and supplies end up on the shop floor within weeks of opening.
Ignoring the evening. West-facing glass in Ahmedabad brings glare and heat in the afternoon, and the space must also look inviting after dark.
Signage left until last. Signage needs landlord and sometimes municipal approval; late signage can delay an opening.
No allowance for change. A layout fixed in joinery is hard to adapt when the product mix or service changes.
